My brother bought what he said was the last G4 Mac to dual boot into OS 9 and OS X. I asked him today how he was liking the experience. Here's his response:
"I have two problems which I have not yet resolved. Sometimes when I connect to the internet, it indicates connected, but I am unable to go anywhere or download email. If I reboot and reconnect all is healed.
Don't know the cause, whether the provider or the computer. I suspect
the computer. Also, I am unable to get the printer driver installed in OS X for my HP Deskjet 5150. The printer works fine in classic mode,
where I have two programs that I use - Word 98 and the Online Bible
program. The printer problem is annoying at the moment since my laser cartridge is going empty - I ordered a new one today. If I want to print something from the web I have to go through a few cut and paste
annoying iterations. The Laserwriter Select 360 works fine from
either classic or OS X. Later this year Online Bible program will be available for free download in OS X and I suspect that I will switch to it and perhaps buy the relatively cheap Office package. So my need for OS 9 may go away."
So there are two questions:
1. His login with his ISP snags. What's the cause?
2. His HP printer isn't working in OS X. HP says that this printer is supported natively in OS X, so I'm not sure why my brother says he needs to install a driver - other than it not working. His networked laser printer, however, works just fine... Any ideas?
I still haven't migrated to OS X, so I'm of little help to my brother. At least on the basis of personal experience. Give me six months!

I would do maintenance, re-build the desktop*, zap the pram** and use a disk utility (First Aid for 9 & run permissions for X in the Disk Utility program of utilities) program like DiskWarrior 3.0.2. That way you start with a machine that eliminates all the previous lack of maintenance (unless you know the history). Good luck.

*rebuild by holding keys option and command or Apple keys at boot until the pop up window prompts you to to rebuild the desktop (select yes)
**hold keys p, r, option, command or Apple at reboot to the 3rd chime
