Don't believe all that you read...and don't forget that for far too many magazines 'computer' == 'Windows PC'. The AV companies all pay for advertising, so you'll NEVER find a Mac magazine say 'Well duh, there are no viruses, what do you need this stuff for?' (Well, MacAddict did...once, and shipped an Autostart on their CD. I learned about it after I got the disk and looked it over. Of course, since my system had been set to CD-Autoplay OFF (advice given about a day into the advent of the Autoplay virus). The virus never ran.)
So, I installed Norton's Anti Virus. I have it
set on the default operation. I have not had one notification of a virus in
all that time. I do keep it updated every month (ususlly, unless I forget.)
Um, you noticed that it's doing NOTHING, yet you keep feeding them money? 8-/ It's not like they guarantee that your computer will be protected in the event of a real virus, or that they'll pay to restore your data, so they're not even insurance.
Here's a hint: you haven't received a warning in those three years because THERE HASN'T BEEN ANYTHING TO WARN ABOUT.
Last month there were more NEW Windows viruses than there have been Mac viruses EVER. This is true most months.
I once calculated that if the Mac were to be represented by its market share in the virus world, there should be something like 1200-1300 mac viruses out there.
There's 26. and not one single one of them infects OS X, and the list includes such winners as WDEF, which was fixed by upgrading to OS 7.
Moreover any new Mac virus is going to have a very slow rate of spread, simply because the host pool is so dilute.
