Yes, you might luck out and win your item for the price your want. If it is a semi-popular item you will likely pay too much for it.
If you bid early and someone else wants it, they will bid up the price, and unnecessarily, why - because only that final bid matters.
The less people that become involved in the bidding war, the lower the final price will be.
What I do is open two windows or two tabs in Camino a couple of minutes before the auction ends. In the first, I refresh the auction as it comes to a close.
In the second, I set up my max bid, put in my password and do everything except hit "submit"
In the last sixty seconds I constantly refresh the first window until I see it come up at about 10 seconds, I hit "submit" in the second window.
You can try www.bidsnipe.com if you want someone else to do this for you, but I find it exciting (I know - my life is boring!).
The other people bidding usually have no time to counter your bid.
You either win the item or you lose, but you know someone out there (who won) is cursing your name for driving up the price at the last minute.
You can sometimes get things quitely inexpensively. It's just simple. Auctions can become very emotional and you do not want to be in a bidding war with someone until the auction ends.
