I subscribe to MacWorld and just received the January 05 issue yesterday. On page 14 on macbeat, it discusses the demise of OS 9. Here is the first paragraph:
"So Long, OS 9
With the release of Mac OS X 10.4--the fifth major incarnation of Apple's Unix based OS--on the horizon it's safe to say that OS X's time has long since arrived. But despite Apple's best efforts to move users to it's modern operating system, hard-core OS 9 loyalists have held on strong. (To be fair, early users were hesitant to jump to a new operating system while it was still finding it's legs and while high-profile OS X-native software was scarce.) Now that all major apps have made the transition to OS X, and now that no new Mac can boot into OS 9 (Apple phased out the last dual-boot Macs with little fanfare in the middle of 2004), new development for OS 9 may be a thing of the past. For most developers, dropping OS 9 is a good thing--and that's good news for you."

When I switched in 2001 from being a PC user, my first Mac was a G4 867 Quicksilver Tower. It booted up in OS X 10.1 the first time I turned it on and from that point on, I was hooked. On rare occasions, I would boot into OS 9 just to see what it was all about but I never seriously used it.
I know a lot of you still use OS 9 as your main OS but the writing is on the wall....it's time to consider upgrading to OS X. I've been using it for 3+ years and it's great! and never crashes. Sure, occasionally an application will crash but never the OS!
