Thanks for the feedback so far. I think this bares looking into. I think Clark put his finger on what I'm thinking of when he wrote, "Does it have a video card?." I do not know. If you type this into the Apple search engine, M9215LL/A, a link to a pdf will appear which seems to describe the server. I see no mention of a video card. Still, without video output how could you control it? Nor is there mention of audio output. One might be able to use a PCI card for that. I'm wondering if there is an AGP slot.
For those of use more interested in functionality than style this is interesting.
XServe is designed to be run headless. It comes set up for remote management through ServerAdmin, WorkGroup Manager and Apple Remote Desktop. I however have found ways to break these. :) IIRC you can get them shipped with a video card.
BTW I've discovered a back up plan. You put the XServe in Firewire Target Disk mode (by pushing a button on the front panel in a certain sequence) and boot from it on another computer (laptop is handy).
