Is there no way to get SMART messages or logs on a Mac? It's 2004, way
beyond wondering what a noise from a hard drive is. Every drive is smart
enabled, scsi, ide etc. as long as it is enabled in the bios. Perhaps there
is a terminal query which would give one an idea of what smart thinks about
the drive.

Granite Digital sells a utility called SMARTVue <http://www.granitedigital.com/smartvue>
which will read the SMART messages. However, if a hard drive is making new noises that's
almost never a good sign.
