I have a newly acquired B&W 300 upgraded to 450 mhz, 80 gig drive, and 640

partitioning the drive it has settled on Apple's version of the Blue Screen
of Death once in a while. It does have another bad habit though. In both OS
10.3.7 and 9.2.2 it will pause for between 30 seconds and a minute. Strange
to have your computer just stop responding until it decides to proceed.
Anyone have a clue as to the cause?
Look in the system and console logs in OS X and see what entries are going on when it 'freezes'.
I had that very thing happen to me and it was a bad USB hub in an Apple ADC display...the log was filled with USB errors at the times it froze up, and everything would apparently just grind to a halt.
Mouse clicks were remembered, though. so I knew the processor and system were still going.
Unplugging the keyboard and mouse from the display and the display from the Dr. Bott adapter fixed the problem. Fortunately, this was on a non-adc Mac; on an ADC Mac the display would be useless.
Also check RAM. Bad RAM can cause all the errors you've described.
If partitioning the drive partly fixed the crashing problem (it shouldn't have: it should have fixed it entirely, by forcing you to do a new install of the OS, or it shouldn't have had an effect at all, meaning the problem was elsewhere) I'd take a long hard look at your drive.
Of course, it's more than possible you've got more than one problem.
Start with the OS X logs.
