Genuine curiosity question: Why would anyone want to run OSX on an old computer? It seems to me that such a bloated gimmicky OS would naturally run slower on an old system... Is it just to prove it can be done, or do you actually expect to see benefits? Or because you don't want to invest in a newer Mac that is designed for it? (I doubt this last)
I'm about to load OS X on a Beige G3/333 w/192MB RAM and 20 gig HD. Yes I realise that I will have to partition it, but that's OK. I'm a Mac fan from the NeXT side, not from the Mac side, so OS X is all I run. Actually that's not entirely true - on my x86 it's Linux; on my Plus, SE, and SE/30 it's System 6 or 7; but on my G3 & higher machines, it's only OS X.
Really I am curious, not judging you. I have a 9500 very happily running 9.1, and a G3 with 8.6, and a couple of iBooks with 10.3.6. (I do audio with Protools, and can't upgrade to the very newest one until some other bleeding edge folks have tested it). My G3 iBook has three partitions, and I use 9.2.2, 10.2.6, and 10.3.6 for various hardware apps, so I am familiar with switching OS's.
If it's for amusement and fun, then fine, I understand. I only use computers to get my audio work done and internet stuff, and do not find troubleshooting computers amusing in the least - so if I ask a weird question please forgive. I just wanna know why!?! I like OS 9 the best, and only use X because my audio apps and internet require it (I like older cars, too, so maybe there is a pattern)...
The old stuff has its place*, but it's pretty clear that the future, for Apple at least, is OS X.
* - but only in the history books. ;)
OK, I'm just having fun; no, I'm not trying to start an OS war here. Seriously, I like System 6 and 7 for what they are - AMAZINGLY simple OSes that do incredible things on incredibly meager hardware - but I'm a Unix guy through & through. I have great respect for the authors of classic Mac OS - it's INCREDIBLE what they did with an OS that would run from a single 800k floppy!
Thanks for allowing such a silly questions,
Just this once. ;)

PS - happy new year, all.
