Hi all, I am new to the list, and am the proud new owner of a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 ghz. I have had the strange wake from sleep issue where all the fans run at top speed and the computer doesn't respond, and has to be force-shutdown. I am wondering if anyone has figured out a way to get around this. Here is what I've read about so far:
Firmware: Mine is up to date according to Apple, version 5.1.8f7. Permissions and fsck: Have performed, no detectable change. Energy Saver: Have been running [EMAIL PROTECTED], so I would think this would prevent sleep. But have gone into it and changed it to never sleep, but still put the display to sleep. Here are some other possible solutions that have mixed reviews as to their effectiveness: Unplug all usb and non-standard graphics cards: I have 1 hub, and I do have an older 16 mb card running a second display. When my ADC to VGA adapter arrives, I will be pulling that board. I have read reports of people running "barefoot," and still have the problem. Return the computer and get a G4, or a P4: I would prefer not to, but if Apple can't make a G5 that works, maybe I'll have to. Call Apple tech support: Have read about people's experiences with Apple support, including a guy who has had two mobo replacements, CPU replacement, and still has the problem. I will be calling Apple today, and let you know how that goes, though I won't be in front of the computer when I call (work schedule, and I'm not taking time off for troubleshooting at this point). Shut the computer down instead of letting it sleep: I am a firm believer in the "shut down" crowd, and have no real need to leave my computer on 24/7. However, I do like to leave it on all weekend, so this will help minimize the problem. I would also like to know if the Applecare plan is now a necessity. My previous Mac is a Yikes I bought secondhand, and it has run like a champ for two years, with multiple upgrades. I have never bought Applecare, but the last time I bought new was 1997. Any advice? It seems that the "PowerMac fans ready for takeoff" issue has plagued the G5 since its inception, and it was hoped that the rev B series would fix the problem. Apparently, it hasn't. Here are the specs and problems: Fans ramp up and computer crashes (aka Kernal panic from sleep): three times over a period of four days. PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 Stock configuration with these parts added: 16 mb ATI PCI Rage card stock item from my Yikes to run second monitor until ADC to VGA converter arrives USB 2 PCI card for 2 extra mobo level ports KVM switch for PowerMac and Yikes Belkin USB 2 hub, with Palm dock, iShock II, Camera USB cable, and apple Extension cable plugged in. APC UPS Powerchute cable from UPS iPod dock in Firewire port Viewsonic 20" flatscreen monitor (hub ports not in use) Epson RX600 printer I have not used the computer very long, so have no idea if the computer was having kernal panic from sleep issues prior to additional equipment being plugged into it, but the problem seems to be independent of running barefoot.
