Whenever you repair permissions you MUST do it from the installer disk
unless you have more than one OSX partition, or an extra hard drive.
It says right in the disk utility that you can't fix disk permissions
on the disk you booted from.

Do you quit Mail before repairing? If not, try it. Also try running
Disk
Utility from the installer diask - I do not know if thgis will help but
it is an experiement you can try...
