Starting up from the OS 10.2 CD that came with the G4 also works fine to repair the permissions. But, as always, they soon need repair again.
It wouldn't be such a pain if it didn't take so long to get started up from the CD.......
I have MacJanitor and use it regularly. Don't know what else to do to make this system run without constant permissions repairs.
Your comments below seem perfectly logical, but I am running OS 10.3.7, which has several updates beyond the 10.3 install CD, and starting up from either the 10.2 or 10.3 CD works fine to repair the permissions.

I hope Kyle or another tech will either shoot me or back me up on this. I thought that running Repair Permissions off the installer disk (CD or DVD) is going backward, because it does not know what updates you've made to your software and does not know about the applications you've installed.
