See if you can look at the Type and Creator codes for these files. I think there are file utilities that can do this--I generally use DataViz MacLinkPlus for this. If you have MacLink, you just drag the file to its window and click on "Quick Tips". The Type should say "JPEG" and the Creator could be several different things. Assuming you're trying this on a copy of the file, change the Creator to "OGLE" (in MacLink you can just click Fix and it will do this automatically). Now see if Preview will open the file. Or try opening from GraphicConverter.
