Hi,

I just upgraded my beloved 300MHz Beige G3 desktop to
OS X 2.8, 4MB video memory, and 256MB of RAM.

I have a question about the RAM - I have heard OS X is
a memory hog, and would like to have enough for
optimum performance, but also recognize that when only
running at 300MHz I'll probably run into empty memory
pretty quick.

I am planning to replace one of the 64MB's with a
128MB, bringing total up to 320MB - and I wonder if
going any higher would be pointless....

So, how much to upgrade to? Is there a way (formula?)
to know how much to upgrade to until you would hit
empty memory?

Thank you,
greg

   Greg,

As the owner of 2 G3/300's running 10.2.5 I can tell ya, the more RAM the better.. In these boxes.
I started with 384mgs in my Gossamer tower and noticed a difference between 9.2.1 and 10.2 when I first installed.. Then found a killer deal on 256mg chips ( $45.00 for 3) and am now up to 768mgs in my tower.. It was worth every penny.. It's now almost as fast as under 9.2.1..
And as a side note for all those Gentoo guys out there.. It screams on a G3/300 with 768mgs of ram..
