I went to digitize some 14 year old HI8 tape and found sections of the tape squealing in the camcorder which caused the image to break up on the screen.
Has anyone heard of baking Hi8 tape the way they do old audio tape for this sort of thing? A web search led to lots of audio tape suggestions, but none for more recent video tapes in cassettes.
