Open a second window. Resize both so one is obove the other. Navigate
through each as required. Click-drag/move/copy between the two to your
heart's content.

Many users maintain a two-window set-up in their finder for just this very
purpose.

*OR*

You can click-drag the file/folder in question onto any item in your
left-hane pane (eg. your root hard drive; your home folder; etc). Let it
hover over the item (a '+' in a green circle should appear), and *that*
item's tree will open up in your current window. Keep the mouse-button
held down as you navigate through the new 'tree' (ie. hovering your
file/folder over a lower-level folder) until you're at the location you
want, then release.

If you change your mind about moving the file (or simply find yourself in
the wrong directory), just move the currently click-dragged item outside
of the finder window. The window will thew revert to your starting
point, and you can resume from there.

To copy (rather than simply move), you need to option-click on the
original file/folder.
