As the original poster, I want to thank everyone for the excellent advice. I've tried every single suggestion, and it seems to me that the quickest way to move items between folders is just to switch to column view and shove things across the columns.

In doing so I have noticed another neat thing about the column view: sound and music files get a little preview app beside them so you can listen to them without having to fire up iTunes or something. Such convenience!

All in all, this X system seems pretty well thought out. As I learn it, I'm being continually impressed by things.

Tom
