If you have a problem remembering things and you find this password feature a pain and unnecessary, why not just use your first name for the rare times you need it when prefs set to log in automatically. What's the big deal?

The bugs in Panther have been known to erase external FireWire drives if the CPU goes to sleep.
You don't exactly have you facts straight but that was a quickly addressed issue that only affected some external firewire 800 drives.

OK. I am. I've never used Panther despite the praises of everyone I know who uses it. I've still been perfectly happy with 10.2.8. (With the exception of Safari, which has never seemed to work well for me. One of these days I'll post to the list with my issues, otherwise Firefox and occasionally IE work for me ).
