What is Jet Direct? If it's something you get by pushing the 4M Plus' menu button, the button doesn't DO anything. No menu... no printer manual either.
JetDirect is HP's name for their ethernet printer interfaces, they're actually print servers handling a multitude of protocols. It will be set up under the I/O section of the menu structure on the 4MP.
You need to take the printer offline before the menu button works. Press the on-line button once, and the light goes off. Now press the menu button and it will cycle through the various menus. When it gets to I/O Press the Item button to step through the various sub-sections.
OK... MIO menu... (there's no IO menu) the only "option" is CFG NETWORK=NO*
An ethernet connected printer can be printed from by ALL the computers on the network.
That's useful...
The printer can be set up in Desktop printers if you have the right PPD file.
I downloaded it from the HP site and installed it. Desktop printer Utility can find it.
I'll send that along separately to you.
Received with thanks... but (see below).
I don't think the set up printer button works if you have the generic Postscript PPD selected,
I tried selecting the specific PPD.
The power switch is on the side in the curved bump-out <http://tinyurl.com/6dbsp>, There's a round thing that looks like a power switch, but that's the latch to open the printer.
Um... I was under the impression that the 4MP was the same as 4M Plus (it uses the same driver). That URL shows me wrong... that's not what I have, mine's a Plus. And it definitely has no power switch... good work, HP.
The 4M Plus is I guess the original version of the machine also sold as LaserWriter Pro 630. The case is different and it has an LED readout, but otherwise it's basically the same (chassis, print engine, toner cartridge, paper drawer are the same).
The damn HP website supposedly has a download site for the 4M Plus manual, but there is no download button and the site takes you round in circles (a Google for this printer reveals that lots of people with 4M Plusesare unable to print etc!)... the "printable" button takes me to an online manual which is NOT downloadable...
