I got mine to work after a lot of trying like you.. If i remember
correctly.. I got it to work by doing the following:

1) a fresh 9.1 install to a 400 Meg partition on a 6 gig drive ( the
remaining space for 10.2)
2) install and run xpostfacto with the default settings
3) install osx 10.2
4) remove the ati video display files
5) update to 10.2.8 from apple..

what video are you using?? the onboard??

A cheaper way to play with OSX is to run pearpc.. I have 10.3.0 running off
of my P4 running at 2.0 Gig with 512 Megs of memory.. a bit slow but faster
than the g3/233 I have running..

Subject: [G] Newbie: OS X on G3 beige

Hi *,

this is my first post, so please bear with me. I did read a *lot* of
related documentation on how to get OS X to work on a G3/333 desktop but
after fiddling with it for days, I wonder if I have a cursed machine or
such... I am a complete Mac newbie but I have a lot of experience with
other machines, such as PCs and Unix workstations. I got this mac
because it seemed like the cheapest way to play with OS X but the
installation is harder than getting NetBSD onto a 1990 decstation...

Okay, here's the summary:

G3/333 beige desktop, 6 GB IDE HD, original Sony/Apple CDROM, ZIP-Drive.
The thing runs OS 8.1 right now, which is hardly usable.

I have tried to:
1. Just boot a 10.2 install CD by hitting "c" on startup, I only get a
grey screen with a "NO" sign.

2. Start the OS X installer from 8.1, I get a window (yay!) saying I
need to hit the restart button below to install. I do that and
apparently nothing happens, at least no reboot. After rebooting
manually, the machine does not do anything, not even boot into OS 8
anymore. So I figured that the OS X installer does fiddle with the
firmware and obviously screws it up.

3. After resetting the PROM 8.1 boots up again.

Am I missing something? Do I have to incrementally upgrade to OS 9 (I
don't have that here) and then to X in order to get things working? Is
there a way to install OS X without having to boot from CDROM, as this
seems impossible?

And another question: Can I use a second hd to install OS X on? How
could I partition it from OS 8? How come a plain 20 G Maxtor HD does not
show up in the OS 8 volume information stuff?

Any hints are appreciated.

Greetings,
Michael
