A beige will boot from a X.1 or a X.2 disk. You can directly install
X.2 without having X.1 installed first. You do not even need 9.x
installed first, but you will need to install 9.x if you want to run
any classic applications.
A beige will not directly boot off of X.3 or X.4 CDs without the help
of xpostfacto and various hoop jumping.
Note that you can not go directly from 10.2.0 to 10.2.8 on a beige,
there is a TIL note on Apples site that says to go from 10.2.0 to
10.2.6 to 10.2.8

Funny, I put a 10.2 installation on a beige G3 (from an iMac
installer, c. 2002 vintage), at least I think that's what it said:
10.2, when I checked it in the "About This Mac" window, & that's what
it says on the CDs. & then I put the 10.2.8 Combo upgrade over it.
The only article I could find quickly is this:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25818
that talks about problems running the 10.2.8 combo updater after an
archive and install of 10.2. I thought I remembered finding an article
that discussed using the 10.2.8 combo updater on a beige, but I could
not find it. I definitely had to do the two step upgrade on my beige
when I did an archive and install.
