Thank you all for your speculations on the death of my monitor having 
been caused by old age. Yes, this is a possibility I considered, even 
though, no, I haven't been using it for four millennia, hahaha. 

I can't complain too much though -- besides that I've got a replacement 
lined up (and until I get it, I can use my Powerbook, which means I'm not 
computerless in the interim) -- it's true that the dead monitor in 
question got really heavy usage for close to a decade.

So, even though I'm temporarily pushing my poor little Powerbook to the 
limit (wow, this experience is making me really appreciate my G3!), I'd 
have to categorize this incident as a "pain in the neck," not a "tragedy."
