My macaholic friend was over to help me install a new DVD-RW in my newly acquired G4 sawtooth tower. He has full sets of both metric and standard allen wrenches and sets of torx, nothing fit - finally had to grind one to

Corner of what? What are you trying to take apart? I don't recall such screws.

On my Sawtooth, I open the big side door, unplug the ribbon connectors at the rear, and remove the shield. Then I remove the front door cover panel. It pops off by depressing the plastic tabs on one side and pulling it out from that side, and has short tabs that fit slots on the opposite side -- works on kind of the same principal the battery cover on a remote does. There are two small screws, Phillips I think, one on either side of the media cage. After unscrewing them, the cage should then slide forward and out, IIRC. Once it's out, you can unscrew the CD drive and replace it with the new DVD_RW, then slide it back in the same way it came out in reverse order.

I could be wrong, but........

All the best,
Ken N.
