So, are there other possibilites out there... something that will leave my files in their directories, but will sort and display them according to certain categories (particularly date) pass them on to Photoshop when I ask it to, etc?

You might wish to look for a copy of a pre-Os X app, ImageAXS Pro. It was a few hundred $ solution IIRC back in the day.

I got a copy on ebay for cheap, and that's what I use most often than not, at present. It's now been released for free, see <http://gallery.sjsu.edu/tutorials/present/imageaxs.html> or other google hits for info.

huge # of ways to sort your files, date created, modified, you can use the dir names as keywords for sets of files, and sort by the keywords, create web pages with lower resolution copies easily, lots of things like that. It will not modify your dir structure or file names, but will put a little .db type file with small icon previews in each folder, and it takes a little bit to build those the first time you import a dir tree.

It is a classic app but it runs fine for me.

They have a new version, emBark Kiosk, which is really powerful but not at all cheap.
