Friend of mine wants to do video editing, but he only has an old

Ditch and upgrade.
Nothing is more frustrating and counterproductive, be it building a
book case or editing a movie, than learning a new craft with
inadequate and balky tools, and editing movies on his getup will be
like building a house with tools you got from the 99 Cent store.
A decent G4 with enough ram to run OS X and a fast enough processor
so that he's not waiting forever is a good thing.
It would be cheaper and far easier for the novice to use iMovie;
iLife 4 packages are really cheap, and even iLife 5 isn't expensive.
