When I load an audio CD to be added to the library, iTunes attempts to contact the CDDB to get the track names. This causes the modem to dial, but iTunes never waits for the modem to finish connecting. It always tells me that CDDB was not available. When I was using iTunes 2.04 under OS 9.1, iTunes would always wait until the modem actually finished connecting before checking CDDB. This is an inconvenience rather than a problem, but it is frustrating when something that worked so conveniently in earlier versions is broken in later "improved" versions.

Jeff,

I don't know if this will be a more (or less) convenient way of collecting the track names or not:

You might try opening iTune's General Preferences and unchecking the box "Connect to Internet when needed." Then to look up CD info in Gracenote's CDDB: Select the CD in the Source list, then choose Advanced > Get CD Track Names, in the Menu.

If I am only adding an odd track or two, I find it just as easy to type in the information myself, under Get Info, and don't even bother with the CDDB.
