Hi Fizzle, So... What seems to be the problem? Give us a more specific indication, and you'll find many helpful people on this particular site.
In the meantime, are you running OS 9 or a version of X? If the former go to the upper left corner of your screen (the multi-colored Apple) click and hold, and scroll down to the "Control Panels" menu - you'll find all your main controls there. In OS X, do the same, only the Apple is now metallic blue, and the control Panel is now referred to as "System Preferences". I am not sure what you are referring to as "Zombie programs", but a start-up items list (with apps to be checked or unchecked) can be found in (I am assuming OS X here) System Preferences/Accounts/your account/startup items (furthest tab on the right). In OS 9, there is an actual folder called "Startup Items" in the main System Folder. Delete the offending aliases (your "shortcut") that may be in there. If you're running any version of Netscape, you may find an AIM instant messenger alias there-trash that puppy! Hope this gets you started.
