I suspect the new memory I ordered from OWC isn't the right kind for my machine. I figured if I could find out the specifications of the DIMMs that are working okay in my B&W G3, I could be sure to match them when purchasing new memory.
I wrote down what is printed on the stickers on the modules as well as on the chips themselves. I did my best to decode the chip codes at http://www.chipmunk.nl/DRAM/ChipManufacturers.htm but was only successful with one of them and don't really know how to interpret the info I got. The info on the site looks like it was last updated several years ago (about when my G3 was being made, I'd guess). This is all probably gobbledygook to almost anyone who doesn't work for a chip manufacturer, but in the hopes that maybe there's somebody on the list that will be able to glance at these various part numbers and interpret them, I thought I'd send them on. The label on the Kingston DIMM, which is 256MB, says it's Kingston ValueRam and the part number is KVR-PC100/256 CE. The chips themselves say Samsung and have the code K4S280832A-TC1H. The chipmunk site says that means the internal organization (of the individual chips, I assume) is "4 Banks x 4M x 8 (128Mbit)" and when I go to the linked module size/bank chart, it says a 256MB module is "Double bank (128MB/Bank)". The last two characters of the code identify it as being "100MHz / PC100 ?-?-? CL2". So it looks like there are two different types of "banks" being talked about here, one for the chips and one for the modules. Does this make sense to anyone? The DIMMs I got from OWC have a sticker that says OWC100SD256324. The chips don't identify the manufacturer and only say "32Mx4 SDRAM-7.5-T". Can anyone tell me what that 32Mx4 refers to? The working 64M module I have has a Samsung sticker with "PC100-322-620" and "KMM366S823CTS-GL" and the chips have the code "KM48S8030CT-GL". That's the one that didn't fit any of the codes on that chipmunk site. Any info, advice, or education much appreciated.
