If the memory isn't bad, according to the test on my folks' PC, I obviously
have the wrong kind of memory. But what kind of "wrong"? ...

OWC will usually take back RAM you ordered incorrectly, with no restocking charges, if you exchange it for other RAM. And, they will definitely take back defectives chips.

Apparently some other
well meaning friend had given her the 256MB Kingston chip. Although it
was a 168 pin PC 100 DIMM, it was one that belonged in an early G4.

How do you know this? What factors are you looking at to determine that? CAS or CL rating? Speed (3-2-2, 2-2-2, etc. or PC66 vs 100 vs 133)? Density?
(what is a low density DIMM anyway?)

I am far from a RAM expert. Maybe Jeff will notice this post and offer up some details.

With our two G3B&W machines running OSX, I have resorted to using identical chips from the same source. I am using four of OWC's 256MB PC100 CL2 168 pin SDRAM chips in each machine.

We have a G4/450DP and a G4/533. Both came to us used. Between them they had a mixture of 128 and 256 chips. Some were PC100 and others PC133. We put the PC100 in the G4/450 and the PC133 in the G4/533. I bought one new 512MB chip for the G4/533 from OWC.

I've found a few resources online that explain more than just the basic
variables of memory, but none are really very layman-friendly.

I don't think there is such a thing as layman-friendly RAM descriptions. Your other post just showed up as I was writing this. Perhaps the detao;s you posted will allow someone to give you more information.
