Um, how so? If extending faster service to a particular area/residence is
not deemed worthwhile by Qwest, I'm not sure why AT&T would do it. <shrugs>
Provisioning a home with cable/DSL service costs a company money. If they
do a cost/benefit analysis and determine they can't make their money back,
they're not going to provide the service. What would the incentive be?

I wish I better understood why people feel that businesses have some sort of
higher calling than making a profit. I *do* think it's great if a business
wants to step up and spend money for the Greater Good. I guess I'm just
uneasy about a business being coerced into doing something simply because
it's felt that they "ought to." There seems to be a strong sense of
entitlement these days and I don't understand where it suddenly came from.

If cable/DSL providers were obligated to give service to everyone,
regardless of how much money it cost to provision them, they would be out of
business in a very short time. Either that, or you and I could look forward
to paying for other peoples' broadband when we pay our own b-band bill.

Of course, we're already doing that right now. Drat.

Best,

James Fraser
