Actually, there were a LOT of improvements from 5-6-7, not merely OS X compatibility.

But there are free image "processors" that are OS X compatible. The Gimp for instance <http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/>, and ImageJ, <http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/> and if you don't use "all the fancy doodle", here's a copy of Photoshop Elements 2.0 for $20 <http:// store.purplus.net/adphel20.html>. The newer version is $36: <http:// store.purplus.net/adphel3wlomo.html>

All OS X compatible (though the Gimp runs in X-Windows).
