I have a G4 Sawtooth running 10.3.9, 768 mb ram and would like to
know if I can boot from an external USB drive. The drive is an ATA

will not boot up and when I go into System Preferences and select
it as the boot drive, then try to restart it just boings. Is it
possible in someway to use this as a startup disk. Checked archives
but found nothing recently pertaining to this.
No. AFAIK no Mac boots from USB, certainly nothing before the G5's
do. It will boot from a firewire drive, so if you get a FW enclosure
this will work.
Not so. I've booted G3 iMacs from USB, but OS 9 only, same setup,
same disk, OS X wouldn't boot. Which was something of a bummer as
I'd got the USB/FW drives specifically to boot some systems (without
FW) under USB.
