Hi everyone,

All this talk of the "Superdrives" got me interested... and I looked up a few of the links and I may be missing what I need.

Right now my Sawtooth G4 runs OS 9.2 and I would like to purchase (and install, myself, and I am NOT a tech-person) a Superdrive. I have an external CD burner now but I'd like to have "more!"

Most of the units I found online need OS X or better... and while someday I *will* upgrade my desktop to Tiger... right now I need something that will run (natively) with OS 9.2.

Is there such a product? Either a CD burner or, better yet, a DVD burner, that will easily work? Please advise!

Thank you,

I installed a Pioneer 107 that I bought from Other World Computing into my G4 733 (same basic Mac as your Sawtooth) when it was still running OS-9, and it worked fine and still works fine when I start up in 9. I also installed and mostly run OS-X now, and it works perfectly in X too. The support guys at OWC can answer any questions about which of these superdrives work with which systems, but so far as I can tell the Pioneer units work with either one. The Mac just accepts them as it did the old original CD burner that they replace, no extra software required. By the way, the physical installation of the superdrive is pretty much just a simple swapout of the old CD burner with only a small screwdriver necessary. As for the wiring, you just unplug your old CD burner and plug in the new superdrive. OWC provides detailed instructions on how to do the swap. It's a great step up because you can store so much more data on a DVD than you can on a CD, not to mention making DVD videos, slideshows, and all the other stuff you can put on DVDs and play in your TV's DVD player or video deck. Highly recommended by me.
