Greetings,

I have reached the point that I want more Hard Drive space in my 2 B&W G3s. Money is in very short supply right now so I am thinking along the used/refurbished market.
What should I look for or avoid in IDE drives?
Are there any particular brands one should avoid for use in a Mac?

Good brands/bad brands tend to cluster around models, not brands. Foex, the old IBM 30 Gig "Deathstars", which have a horrible reputation; their current line (now Hitachi) are good drives. All the manufacturers have had ups and downs.

I assume that most any IDE hard drive should be compatible is that correct?

The B&W (and up through the Quicksilver models) have an ATA controller issue limiting the size of the supported drive to 128 Gb; any drive larger than that needs to be attached to an ATA controller expansion card. There's a software fix for the large drive problem, it involves partitioning the larger drive, but I much prefer the hardware controller solution; not only can you support more drives, but they're faster, too.

Beyond that issue, any modern IDE drive will fit.

Computer Geeks has a decent selection cheap right now:

Seagate 80GB drive for $49; not a bad price.

I have noticed that the IDE drives listed in the Apple Macintosh section on Ebay seem to be more expensive than the drives in the general computer section so naturally I wonder if there is a reason.

Because they think that attaching "Mac" to the name means an automatic 25% markup.
