Too much drive space is never enough. :-)

Data is like gas. It expands to fill all available space!

What should I look for or avoid in IDE drives?
Are there any particular brands one should avoid for use in a Mac?

Figure *new* bare IDE and SATA drives should cost no more than 50c per GB.

Keep an eye out for sales. Sometimes those rebates can be amazing... We bagged several 200 GB drives for $30 after rebate, on Black Friday.

I've had a lot of good luck with used HDs. But many feel refirbs or new are a better option.

ObReminder: Regardless of your drive type - keep good backups! That way you aren't hurt if a drive decides to push daisys unexpectly!

general computer section so naturally I wonder if there is a reason.

many a seller will charge more for anything that will work on a Mac. It's really crappy of them to do so IMO. I still laugh when I'm at
an electronics store and look at the bog standard items (SCSI cables come
to mind right away) that have a higher margin than the "PC compatible"
items, never mind the fact that they are the same.

I hate the "mac premium" too, but it's what the market will bear.

eBay is a good place to buy drives. Be smart with your search criteria. I like to limit my searches to within 50 miles of my home. That way I can go pick the drive up. That saves a lot!

Computers & Networking > Drives, Controllers & Storage > Hard Drives - Internal > Hard Drives-IDE

Search on: (80*,120*) -fix -rescue -repair

That's for 80 and 120 GB drives, and eliminating some of the crap listings that are in those categories.

Then refine that search to 50 miles from your zip code.

Then bookmark it... :)
