I was told by Larry of OWC, err... I think it was him... anyway it was someone like that, that there are no USB-to-Firewire adapters, and any such device would be exceedingly non-trivial, perhaps impossible. So short of upgrading to a new Mac, if you have a PowerMac G4, and are willing to give up sleep, you can use a PCI USB2 card. I wouldn't get a nano or vPod unless you have USB2 in some form. I'm using a USB2 PCI card in my dual-533 Digital Audio and it works well as long as I don't put the computer to sleep with the iPod (or any other "mass storage device") attached - doing so will cause a hard crash! As long as I don't sleep (the computer, that is :), it works reliably. It works, but I definitely want to upgrade eventually to a Mac with built-in USB2. FYI, I love the new vPod, incidentally, and wouldn't go back to an older model.

Hi all,

I have a feeling I'm going to get an upgrade of my 3rd Gen iPod from Santa this year. :) I was wondering if there is any way whatsoever to use Firewire with these things. I know plugging the iPod through the firewire cable of an older iPod will result in an error message on the iPod, but I was thinking maybe cable adapters or something else? I am fearing the inevitable slowdown when I am forced to use my very unreliable USB ports. I've never had an issue with Firewire, and prefer it.

TIA,
Lavode
