It isn't significantly cheaper, but you know what you are getting and if
you use premium critical parts, you get what you pay for, no surprises.
Drivers are provided in CD-ROM by the components' manufacturers and
upgrades can be easily obtained from the manufacturer's site and other's.
Few mysteries, little hassle.
One of the things I've enjoyed the most from my Wintel clone machines is
that whenever I upgrade one of them, several others receive an upgrade too
from the replaced parts, in a daisy chain fashion.
For example, I recently upgraded my server's second HD with a 200 GB unit.
Its former 120 gig went to my non-work computer and its former 80 gig went
to my workstation as its second disk. The former second disk (40 GB) became
my workstation boot disk and the old boot disk (20 GB) went to my Beige G3.
The Beige's old disk (15 GB) became my server's boot disk and its old 6 GB
boot disk was given to our building caretaker's daughter. Whew!.
Even my daughter's G3 iMac has a 40 GB disk that was formerly in a Wintel
machine. I believe that disk is 8 years old.
I have done similar things with motherboards, up to three swaps at a time.
Lots of work but it stretches my investment to the max and I have in most
cases just the right amount of resources in each unit in my computer farm
(six machines). No wasted power, memory or storage.
My personal opinion is that it would be great for the growing Mac community
to be able to do the same. It's just an opinion and it works for me, might
not work for anyone else and I am not definitely saying that anyone here or
anywhere should install junk in their beloved G5, much less scrap it and
get a cheap Biostar MB with a Celeron and run a hacked OSX for Intel. I am
definitely pro-motherhood and against sin.

From what I understand, building your own PC isnt'y signifigantly
