Ok, turn off the Dock magnification and size it down to remove most
of the disneyishness. You can also set it to auto-hide, which I do,
gets it out of the way all the time. (I know of only one person who
actually like and uses the dock magnification feature)
Yes, I too hide it and don't have mag on, I have made it a bit less
wide (it is on a huge screen) and it looks a bit better. I don't like
it but am sort of getting used to it. I need to automate a whole lot
of things. I used to hit option command t to trash anything and
control command t to empty trash. I will one day (priority is not
super high) and then I won't have to look at it so much! Who knows,
there may come along or actually be better customisable dock software...
Second, stop worrying about what programs are open.
Seriously.
I know what you are saying and the considerations you adduce have
been vaguely at the back of my mind. These are indeed things to be
grateful for in the move to X. See, I am cheering up a bit!
