May prove helpful; it lists a section on your "grey screen" (link at top
right of page).

As you try to start your Mac, push the button that's in front of your CD
drive to open the tray - quickly insert your OS X Installer disk 1 and
gently push the tray in - the drive will "recognize" what you're trying to
do and close for you - hold down the "C" key (either right away, or hold
down all the time during this process) to force the Mac to read the CD
instead of the HD.
