Subject: Re: [G] modem configs
I have a few dial-up configs, to choose one you either tick one from
a list under the dial up menu, top right of menu bar in Finder and
then click connect. The tick stays there. Is that it? Is that the
only indication I am really connected to the one I want (three hrs
down the track I have sometimes forgotten!)
I go to the Internet Connection panel, Internal Modem panel and it
shows Main Number! (Not the one I may be connected to). All others
are greyed out. Status at bottom is "Connected to 203.etc (This IP
number is useless to me).
Surely this is bad software mistake? <snip>
snip
This is a deficiency of the dialup procedure in OS X. As far as I
can tell it treats other numbers in Internet Connect like alternate
numbers to the main. For one thing this is not how it worked in OS 9
where the PPP control strip did allow you to setup different numbers
for the same ISP and which ever you selected last stayed selected.
In 9, I never used the control strip. But my panels worked right and
I could see what I was connected to in a firm and trustworthy manner.
I am not sure if there is any lesson for a solution for me in what
you say, I have never looked at location or know anything about it.
Wherever I am, I find I am there. (You see, B. Banzai is right!). I
don't think my computer even knows my phone number? Does it need to
know? I don't even think my phone knows its own number. It dials out
ok, but that is because I grab it by the neck and punch in numbers,
When it rings, it always looks a bit startled to me....
They made X in too much of a hurry. I know the world is coming to an
end but there are other more graceful ways to wait till the doomsday.
