I strongly second the idea of email and web independence from your ISP. The email server I've been using for about 3 years is fastmail.fm. They have four categories of accounts, ranging from free to $40/year. I use the latter, but most people can probably be more than comfortable with the $20/year accounts. Their web interface to email is the best I've seen.
