Just to reinforce the comment on corporate purchases and their price focus--the vast majority of corporate purchasing departments consider only first cost, that is, what the box costs off the shelf. Apple has tried with some success to show such limited-vision people (especially companies trying to sell their own products/services as "premium") that what really matters is life cost, that is, the true cost of the box over its useful life, including maintenance and support. Clearly, Windows systems have a much higher measurable cost of maintenance and a greater, but less-measurable user cost when viruses and other malware (not to mention Solitaire!) eat up employee's productive time.

Yes, Apple does face a cost issue on software, when a company already owns Windows software and faces replacing it with Mac software, but the life cost analysis still applies.

Another factor is that computer support people tend to have a lot of influence on purchases--and Windows people are obviously biased toward areas of their own expertise, plus they know Macs take a lot less support, which threatens their jobs. The same applies to "experts" quoted in the popular press, IMHO.

If these views sound heartfelt, it is because they come from my personal experience as a Mac user since 1984 that has worked since before then in a couple of large corporations.

Just for fun, notice the number of mentions Apple/jobs now get in such publications as Fortune and Business Week, compared to Microsoft/Gates. Those magazines include an index of the companies/people mentioned in that issue, so it is easy to see! And it is easy to see why Mr. Gates (and the odd Mr. Ballmer) are smiling less these days...
