Amazing what accumulates there, eh? :)
Indeed. :)

On january 13, this discussion ended thus (An excerpt follows):
"...Watch your revenues crash as you yank the rug out of over half of
your revenues. Apple becomes an iPod only company. The stock tanks,
shareholders revolt, and Steve Jobs rues the day he ever listened to
darm0k.

woohoo!

Fun being the man who killed Apple, eh?
;o)

Now, that the Intel Macs are here, what does=20
Bruce think about the future of Mac now?

<EVIL GRIN>

Dont do that! Write such comments! Now I have to wipe freshly spilled coffee form my screen & keyboard! ;o)

Many people are itching to impement OSX on x86=20
boxes, simply because they want a good=20
operating system on lower priced boxes?

Right. Until the TCO gets back to being lower=20
than Wintels, Macs will make no more inroads in=20
office settings. As for residential/personal=20
sales - I am still amazed at how fast Macs sell.=20
But then again, more of my friends are buying=20
used Macs for themselves and new PCs for their=20
children -- because that's what the kids have at=20
school. A whole new level of Oops.

My kid is not going to get a new PC while dad hangs on to his old mac. She is using pee-sees at school, mostly for games & such, and at home she uses my old mac for games (on-line and CD-rom's). Never ever is a pee see going to cross my threshold! What will schools use pee- sees for? Nothing u can use a mac for too. Maths? Composition writing? Maths: Desktop calculators. Composition writing? Text Edit. The only things I can imagine one MUST have office for, is to read/ exchange memos with school & other parents. Its a sad fact that Word has become a de facto standard for document exchange.

Isnt this almost the same as licensing clones?=20
(when everyone and his brother can port X w/no=20
trouble to non-apple hardware, wont apple see=20
their profits sink?

Instead of creating new market share, the clone=20
sales simply bit into Apple's. (Proof that there=20
is a BIG need for more reasonably prices Macs,=20
IMO!)

It did, remember the issue of Macworld where Jobs had taken the helm & cancelled the clone line. And something that also explains The Dark Side's need to be so uptight with their OS-licences, cause that is their only revenue-making stuff, Dell et al profiting from the hardware (but not as much as Apple does, was it about 5% versus 20% profit per unit Dell/Apple?)

I see that as a failure on Apple's part. They=20
could have done/tried a number of things to fix=20
it, but instead chose to screw a lot of people.=20
Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory.

- Dan.

The huge Model Proliferation in The Age Of Performas was not a good thing. Say what u like about Jobs, but focusing on a few laptops and the (finally sensible) iMac, with the G5 for top-level users, has undoubtedly helped. Tossing in the iPod was not a bad idea either. As it is, macs are still pricey, which is what corporations look at. A basic pee see can be gotten way cheaper than the basic mac (but next time, maybe they could get rid of those big, black, unsightly filing- cabinet sized boxes & get some neat Minis instead....)
The future is not necessarily as dark, Dan! Have some patience!
:o)))
