Have you tried Finder's File > Find command in OS X 10.4? It uses the
Spotlight database to do exactly that....and hey, that menu command's
only been there since, ohhhhh 1984 or so :-P

You mean the one that comes up with command + f?

The one that when you type "joke" in (and carefully make it just 'name contains' as criteria) to find a folder of jokes you know is somewhere, you get, as well as what is obviously useful, lots of html files that have none such in their names, ditto documents of all sorts and lists of things like 400IE70A-7EED- B7DF-9F2677D30105.webbookmark and Hotlist.html.bak (which are ultimately rational or "correct" , no disputing this)? Where you can't straight out obviously just find a file with something in its name (as in true Sherlock 1 or Find File of older) but what might be in the file as well? The one that never seems to remember that you are fond of the just the name criteria. The one that is configurable in sys prefs.... and perhaps needs toing and froing there?

Don't get me wrong. I find these discussions very useful because behind it all I look at what is being said and notice I can configure the new software to do better what I want and see things I did not see before.

I just think it is a stretch to say that it is just the good old '84 FF. They had a sense of not trying to be everything to everyone back in '84 and I reckon this was a good attitude.
