I should add it may be easier to know whether the iMac G4 can read DVD disks by looking into the System Profiler on the machine itself. Under the Apple menu, click on About this Mac, then on More Info. Look for info in Hardware, then ATA. You should see something about the optical drive. If it makes no sense to you, just paste what you see here for us to read.
