Jobs left (was pushed out of) Apple in the mid 80's. Apple fell into dire straights in the mid 90's. I think that Apple reached it's all time high in 92. Jobs may have saved the company from oblivion in '97, but keep in mind several CEOs came and left Apple in the interim between his ousting and return.
The reason Apple went to the brink was not because Steve left, since they would definitely see good times before he came back. In any event, what happened to drag Apple down doesn't have to happen again by a long shot. Those of us who have been Apple users for a really long time should be able to remember that.
