Mike if you have gone through a hundred bongs , you should be very stoned by 
now !!
Glad to hear you fixed your problem.
When in doubt with Ram I have run Memtest which has on the odd occasion found 
faults with memory modules - it just takes quite a while to run is all.
OSX is very fussy when it comes to Ram.
USB 2.0 cards - yeah I have a couple in my parts bin that caused lock-ups and 
sleep problems.
