It actually sounds to me that the usb hub may be going bad. It's able to
power everything else that requires lower power output from it but hangs on
trying to run the hard drive itself. He said it works perfectly fine when
connected directly to the usb port coming out of the computer which means
that it has enough power when operated directly. Try a new powered hub and
see if that fixes the problem. But from the sounds of it, that is what the
problem is and not the drive itself.
