Hi Lindsay,

That may be the case. I know I have a fairly good sense of direction,
spatial orientation, etc so playing Shades of Doom is relatively
straight forward for me. On the other hand you indicated problems with
a sense of direction in real live travel so that will certainly effect
your playing Shades of Doom, and you do seem to have an inordinate
amount of problems with the game. I won't go as far to say it is
impossible but you may have more difficulty than someone like myself.

If you are good at map reading Shades of Doom has a feature where you
can output the current level to a braille map. If you have a braille
printer you could try brailing a map of the current level and use that
to give you an idea of what the level looks like which may improve
your understanding of the level's layout.

If you do not have a braille printer but have a set of Legos you can
construct one as you play the level. For instance, on level one you
begin in a east/west corridor at the top of the map. There is a short
north/south corridor that connects to a second east/west corridor
right below the first one. There is a second north/south corridor that
connects to a third east/west corridor, and so on. Its actually pretty
simple if you feel how the level is laid out. All you do is go back
and forth from west, to south, to east, to south, to west, to south,
to east, and so on.

In short, the only suggestion I can give you is try and create a map.
Maybe e, just maybe,
that will help you mentally grasp the layout of the game's levels
enough to actually be able to navigate them. I don't know if this
would help but maybe a developer like myself could create a game like
Maze Craze which might help you practice navigating mazes or
something.

Cheers!
