Hi Willem,
No, the classic side-scrollers have a left/right direction and an
up/down direction, but don't have forward/backward direction. To put it
another way you can move left and right along the x axis, move up and
down along the y axis, but can't move forward and backward in the z axis
as you could in an FPS.
For those of you who never saw games like Mario, Double Dragon,
Castlvania, megaman, etc here is a quick description of the mechanics.
Your game character started on the far bottom left side of the screen.
You would usually move right through the game world occasionally jumping
over objects or climbing up to a higher level and then continuing right
eventually. Some also let you fall down to a lower level or climb down,
but you were always continuing from the left side of the screen to the
right, sometimes up and down, but never forward/backward.

It doesn't have a left and right though.
It gets a bit confusing with using the arrow keys though. I guess you
could call the back and forward movement left and right.
