Yes there is a reason.
You have to use the equipment menue with E, and click on the body part, ---
head, torso, left or right hand etc, of the individual character (use tab to
switch characters).
The game will display any items the character can put there, and you can
just choose one and press enter on it.
this counts for weapons too, ---- just look at your character's hands.

hi i have a query when i look at my inventary and try and click on a item
by pressing enter it won't let me like when i have weapons in my invantry
and press enter on it it does not wield it.
also if i click on a peace of clothing to try and where it it won't let
me. is their any reason for this.

Oh, I'd say Entombed has a long long ways to go before it sees a 1.0
stable release. Not surprising really seeing as it is a difficult genre
of game to program given the amount of programming and development
involved. The thing to keep in mind is that whoever said it would be
ready by fall of 2009 was only speculating at a release date, and
apparently underestimated the time involved in creating the game.
